Helping You Succeed
MCL Technologies offers OEM branded versions and MCL branded versions of its software products. Decide which you want BEFORE making any purchases.
Whether you purchase an OEM branded product or an MCL branded product is more of a business decision than a technical decision. The software functions the same regardless of the brand you use.
Think of the MCL brand as a cross-manufacturer brand. For example, an MCL branded MCL-Client license will activate any/all MCL branded MCL-Client software for all supported manufacturers.
Regardless of whether you choose an OEM branded product or an MCL branded product, the software package you download and install must match the brand of the license you purchase.
Similarly, as described below, the brand of MCL-Net additional users you purchase must match the brand of your MCL-Net.
MCL-Collection software is available for electronic order fulfillment and Web activation.
Two methods of activation — Software Key Activation and Hardware Key Activation — are available for most of our PC-based products.
If you decide to use Hardware Key Activation, you must purchase Hardware Key(s) separately. Refer to Ordering Hints for more information about Hardware Keys.
Note: Regardless of the activation method you use, the software product ordering number is the same.
Note: MCL-Clients cannot be Hardware Key Activated.
You need at least one MCL-Designer to develop MCL V3 applications. If someone else is developing your applications, this is an optional purchase for you. More
OEM branded versions of MCL-Designer will allow you to develop applications for the given OEM partner’s devices only.
The MCL branded Full Edition of MCL-Designer allows you to develop applications for all MCL supported devices. The only current exception to this is the Unitech HT660.
To create applications for Unitech HT660, you need the MCL-Designer for HT660 provided by Unitech Europe to its customers with every HT660 mobile computer purchase.
Be aware that more than one MCL-Designer product offering is available for some manufacturers’ devices. These MCL-Designers typically allow you to create applications for only a subset of that manufacturer’s devices. Therefore, if you want to develop applications for the given manufacturer’s entire line of MCL supported devices, you may need to purchase more than one MCL-Designer.
When you purchase MCL-Designer, you are essentially buying a license to use the related MCL-Designer Device Plug-ins (DDPs). In order to create applications for your targeted devices, you need to be able to use the DDPs that correspond to those devices. Therefore, it is useful to understand the relationship between your MCL-Designer purchase and DDP licensing.
For example, MCL-Designer Full Edition gives you a license to use every MCL branded DDP for every supported manufacturer. There is no MCL branded DDP for the Unitech HT660.
There is no upgrade path from a manufacturer specific MCL-Designer to the MCL branded MCL-Designer Full Edition.
If you think you will always want to develop applications for only one manufacturer’s devices, go ahead and purchase a manufacturer specific version of MCL-Designer.
If you think you might want to develop applications for more than one manufacturer’s devices, you are best to purchase MCL-Designer Full Edition.
If you think you will only want to develop applications for one manufacturer’s devices (and consequently purchase a manufacturer specific version of MCL-Designer) and then later realize you want to develop applications for another manufacturer’s devices after all, you can always purchase a second, third or more manufacturer specific MCL-Designer and activate those licenses on the SAME MCL-Designer Engine. In this way, every DDP for every manufacturer specific MCL-Designer you have is licensed for use on the given MCL-Designer Engine. You can now develop applications for multiple platforms.
Note: This is also important to you when you are buying device independent add-ons, such as MCL-Designer Add-on for SAP. With just one single add-on license, you can create applications that interface with SAP for any device that has a licensed DDP on the given MCL-Designer Engine. The same also applies to other device independent add-ons for MCL-Designer, such as MCL-Designer Voice Add-on.
In deciding which MCL-Designer to purchase, first verify for which devices you want to be able to create applications. Next, refer to the MCL-Designer to Device Cross Reference Table to determine which MCL-Designer(s) will license the DDPs you need for your targeted device(s). Then, decide whether you want an OEM branded or MCL branded MCL-Designer.
To migrate your MCL V2 applications into MCL V3 applications, you need:
The V2 to V3 Migration Wizard is a free add-on to these MCL-Designers; it does not work with any other MCL-Designer.
To create data capture applications that integrate with a SAP host system.
You need:
MCL-Designer Add-on for SAP is device independent. You need just one license to create SAP applications for any/all devices (DDPs) licensed for use on your MCL-Designer Engine.
If someone else is developing your applications, this is an optional purchase for you.
You will, however, need to purchase MCL-Bridge V3 for SAP to deploy your SAP application.
Note: Before you purchase this product, please be aware of its Certification requirements.
To create voice-enabled data capture applications, you need:
MCL-Designer Voice Add-on is device independent. You need just one license to create voice applications for any/all devices (DDPs) licensed for use on your MCL-Designer Engine.
If someone else is developing your voice applications, this is an optional purchase for you.
Note: MCL-Voice products are available to Certified Voice Partners only.
You need one MCL-Client for each and every device that is to run an MCL V3 application. More
MCL-Client licenses are available in volume purchases. For example, MCL-Client (5) and MCL-Client (100) allow you to activate MCL-Client on 5 and 100 devices, respectively.
MCL-Client is factory installed and license activated on some devices at no charge to you. Consequently, you do not need to purchase an MCL-Client license for the following devices:

To run a voice application created with MCL-Designer and MCL-Designer Voice Add-on, you need a special version of MCL-Client, called MCL-Client Voice.
These clients are licensed to support 2 or 4 languages, such as English and Spanish or French, Dutch, Italian and Portuguese.
Note: MCL-Voice products are available to Certified Voice Partners only.
Every MCL deployment needs at least one of these communications components. You may need several depending on how you configure your system and distribute your devices. More
MCL-Link is available in three configurations — 1 port, 4 port and 8 port. These are equivalent to having one, four and eight instances of MCL-Link running on the same computer wherein each instance supports one serial communications port.
The 4 port and 8 port multi-com configurations of MCL-Link are the only way to have more than one instance of MCL-Link running on a single computer for serial communications.
USB communications are only supported by the standard MCL-Link 1 port configuration. Only one USB port is supported for communications.
Note: If you are running MCL-Link on a PC with two USB ports, you can insert your license activated Hardware Key in one USB port and use the second port for your device communications over USB with MCL-Link.
MCL-Link Lite is not available for separate purchase. It is only available as part of an OEM bundled package for certain devices, and will only function with the given bundled device.
MCL-Net is available in several configurations according to the number of concurrent users that it will support. For example, MCL-Net (100) and MCL-Net (250) support 100 and 250 concurrent users, respectively. (See V3 Add-on Purchases for more information)
Some MCL Bridges are included with other components as standard capabilities. Others require separate purchase. More
No separate purchase necessary. To implement this you need MCL-Designer plus MCL-Net or MCL-Link.
No separate purchase necessary. To implement this you need MCL-Designer plus MCL-Net or MCL-Link.
You need MCL-Bridge V3 for SAP to deploy applications you create using MCL-Designer plus MCL-Designer Add-on for SAP.
You need one MCL-Bridge V3 for SAP for each MCL-Net or MCL-Link on your network that you want handling communications to your SAP system. If you have 12 MCL-Net subnets running to support, for example, 3000 SAP users with 255 users per subnet, you need quantity 12 of MCL-Bridge for SAP.
MCL-Bridge V3 for SAP has two deployment components — an IDOC component and an RFC/BAPI component. If you are interfacing with SAP using:
MCL-Bridge V3 for SAP is an SAP certified product.
Note: Before you purchase this product, please be aware of its Certification requirements.
You typically need 123 Print or an MCL-Designer for Datamax, but not both, to create barcode label printing applications.
If someone else is developing your applications, this is an optional purchase for you.
Note: 123 Print creates applications to insert variable content into existing label formats and print the resulting label; it does not design Label Formats.
This is a free product. Order your no cost license from Datamax.
This software is available from MCL Technologies upon special request only. Please contact us if you are interested in protecting your MCL applications.
In Europe, these capabilities are offered only as a service through ScanSource Europe.
Several product bundles, called MCL-Collection, are available for purchase. These bundles typically include the following core components: More
Quantity 1: MCL-Designer V3
Quantity 1: MCL-Net V3 for 5 Users
Quantity 1: MCL-Link V3
Quantity 5: MCL-Client V3
If the targeted device has MCL-Client factory installed and activated, the related MCL-Collection does not include MCL-Client licenses.
Similarly, if the targeted device is batch only, the given MCL-Collection does not include a license for MCL-Net.
There is also an MCL branded bundle called MCL-Collection Full Edition that supports every device supported by MCL V3, except the Unitech HT660.
Your organization already has an MCL solution deployed. You want to expand your deployment. However, you are new to the project, so you are not sure what to buy.
More
Branding has no functional impact on any MCL product. You may purchase the appropriate OEM branded product or its equivalent MCL branded product at any time. Whether you buy an OEM brand or MCL brand is purely a business decision, not a technical decision. In fact, you can freely mix-and-match an OEM branded product and its equivalent MCL branded product in any deployment. The only exception to this rule is with MCL-Net as described below.
Before placing an order to add more users to an existing MCL-Net installation, you should have a bit of an understanding about how additional user licenses work.
First of all, MCL-Net additional user licenses must have the SAME brand as the original MCL-Net installation. Therefore, you need to determine if your current MCL-Net installation is an OEM branded or MCL branded product. To easily find out which brand you have, look at the product license for your existing MCL-Net. The first 2 digits of your license number indicate the brand as follows:

Casio |

Next, you need to decide which MCL-Net additional user packages you need.
Consider the following examples to understand how additional user licenses work:
You make an initial purchase of ‘MCL-Net 50’ users. You now want to have 75 MCL-Net users on the same server. How should you proceed?
As mentioned above, the brand for your additional MCL-Net users must be the same brand as that of the original MCL-Net to which the users are to be added.
Now consider the case where you have MCL-Net for 250 users. You now want to have 600 MCL-Net users on the same server. How should you proceed?
Note: Multiple instances of MCL-Net can be activated and run on the same computer. Each ‘MCL-Net 250 additional users’ corresponds to a full subnet. Each ‘subnet’ is an instance of MCL-Net and can handle up to 250 users. And up to 250 subnets can be installed on the same computer for total maximum of 62,500 users per computer.
Now consider the case where you have MCL-Net for 100 users. You now want to add a second subnet of MCL-Net users on the same server. How should you proceed?
You will now have 2 subnets that support 100 users each. The second instance ‘inherits’ the maximum number of users from the original MCL-Net. Therefore, even though you have purchased MCL-Net 250 additional users, your second subnet will also only support 100 users.
Continue with the previous example. If you now want each of the subnets to support 125 MCL-Net users:
When you add the 25 additional users to your original MCL-Net to support a total of 125 users, your second MCL-Net subnet will automatically increase to support 125 users as well.
One final note. When you activate your MCL-Net additional user licenses, be sure to use the same activation method (software key activation or hardware key activation) as the original MCL-Net.
MCL-Collection V2 products are still available for purchase from Motorola/Symbol and their channel partners.
More
Before purchasing one of these products, be aware that MCL Technologies no longer maintains these products. They are what they are. These products are several years old and therefore have certain limitations vis-à-vis today’s technologies. For example, MCL-NetS24 does not run on computers with multi-core processors.
You need MCL-Designer V2.x to develop MCL V2 applications. If someone else is developing your applications, this is an optional purchase for you.
To create data capture applications that integrate with a SAP host system. You need:
If someone else is developing your applications, this is an optional purchase for you.
You will, however, need to purchase MCL-Bridge V3 for SAP to deploy your SAP application.
Note: Before you purchase this product, please be aware of its Certification requirements.
You need MCL-Designer for Phaser to develop applications for a Symbol Phaser —
P360, P370, P460 or P470. If someone else is developing your applications, this is an optional purchase for you.
You need an MCL-Code Interpreter V2.x for each and every terminal that is to run an MCL V2 application.
MCL-Code Interpreter license V2.x is sold by ‘units’ which are shipped to you on a dongle key that fits onto your PC’s parallel port.
One ‘unit’ is required to activate a batch MCL-Code Interpreter
Two ‘units’ are required to activate a radio MCL-Code Interpreter
A batch MCL-Code Interpreter can run batch MCL V2 applications only.
A radio MCL-Code Interpreter can run batch and wireless MCL V2 applications.
Every MCL V2 deployment needs at least one of these communications components. You may need several depending on how you configure your system and distribute your terminals.
You may purchase MCL-Link V3 instead of MCL-Link V2.x to handle the batch communications for your V2 mobile computing applications. MCL-Link V3 has a V2 compatibility mode you can select.
MCL-Link deployments for Phaser require MCL-Link V2.x for Phaser.
MCL-Link Lite is not available for separate purchase. It is only available as part of an OEM bundled package for certain devices, and will only function with the given bundled device.
You need MCL-Bridge for SAP to deploy applications you create using MCL-Designer V2.x plus MCL-Designer V2.x Add-on for SAP.
You need one MCL-Bridge V3 for SAP for each MCL-NetS24 or MCL-Link on your network that you want handling communications to your SAP system.
V2 and V3 deployments of MCL both use MCL-Bridge V3 for SAP
Note: Before you purchase this product, please be aware of its Certification requirements.
